The Greek word “church” (ekklasia) means “those called out to a public assembly.” We typically use the word “church” to refer to our assembling for worship, putting aside our daily activities in this world. As Christians we are called out of the world. In February we emphasized this need to distinguish ourselves from the world around us.
This month we view the other side of the coin. Separation is not the same as isolation. Yes we are not to be of the world, yet we must remain in the world. Our challenge is to navigate the seas of society without drowning in its sin and worldliness. As they say, “All the water in the ocean cannot sink a boat unless it gets into the boat.” Jesus prayed, “My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it” (John 17:15-16).
As a matter of fact the Lord Jesus commissioned us: “Go into the all world and preach the gospel”(Mark 16:15). Jesus taught, "You are the salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13). He also taught, “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16). We are to position ourselves publicly so as to influence people around us for Christ.
Too often we Christians keep our religion to ourselves. We hide it under a bushel. We do “church” inside four walls, unseen by most of the lost community. Our shine is ineffective and our salt grows stale.
Do not fear to make your faith known. Only as your salt infiltrates society will it flavor people for good. Only with your light raised high will others find the way to God. Witness where you work. Share where you shop. Shine at your school. Speak up at your sports. Voice your faith where you volunteer community service. Evangelize everywhere.
June Challenge: Be a billboard for Jesus. Position yourself in the community where outsiders can see you shine for Jesus.
“Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have” (I Peter 3:15).
Make a Difference . . . in your community!
